The South Australian Derby is regarded as the most prestigious race held in the State is a key highlight of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, and is one of the four Group 1 races held during the Carnival’s three big race days at the picturesque Morphettville Racecourse.
This feature race is a 2500m staying event for three-year-olds, and this distance and high status ensures many of the season’s finest horses compete in the race. In the line-up every year you’ll be almost certain to spot champion stayers of the future – perhaps even a Melbourne Cup winner. For example, South Australian Derby winners Count Chivas (1995) and Shiva’s Revenge (1991) both continued on to place second in the Melbourne Cup, and the mighty Subzero won the SA Derby/ Melbourne Cup double in 1992. In 2003, the mighty Mummify won the SA Derby and the Caulfield Cup.
