As the finest weekends of Sydney racing gallop full pelt towards us (hi Championships Days 1 and 2), you’re probably too busy scrambling to sort out head pieces or pocket squares to be too bothered with much else. That’s why we’ve decided to give you a hand in the equine department and clue you up on some four-legged friends to watch out for during these two pinnacle events. Consider it a little background and interest into each of their heroic little stories!

Oh and by watch out for, we literally mean, watch out for. We’re definitely not saying you should sell your dad’s vinyl collection and bet it all on Winx.

Upcoming races: The Championships Day 2 at Royal Randwick (8 April)

You’ve probably heard about this stunning black beauty before, if not for the cheeky name, for the incredible success crowning her the glamour mare of Sydney Racing. Winning $10million plus in prizemoney across 16 straight wins (often leading by many lengths), it could be said you’ve got a safe ‘win’ when it comes to Winx. Look out for her dashing blue and white colours on course and you’ll be a part of a fan club stretching across the globe.

One to watch after winning over $1.2million in prizemoney with 5 wins out of 8 starts, Astern can be recognised on course as a beautiful bay (brown) horse in blue silks. Trained by John O’Shea and owned by the wealthiest and largest racing empire in the world, Godolphin, keep your eyes on this one.

A grey/brown filly (female horse) trained by Chris Waller (Winx’s trainer), look out for the purple silks with white stars on course. There are high hopes on this horse after dominating a list of Group 2 races in her career, out of strong bloodlines.

This beautiful bay is another Group 1 winner with a total of over $2million of prizemoney clocked up so far. Trained by Newcastle trainer Kris Lees, look out for blue and yellow silks on course and remember the French named translated to “The Roman” when you’re next on course.

Son of Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, and trained by Chris Waller (yes, he gets around), this memorable New Zealand born horse should be a force to be reckoned with on course. Look out for orange and black silks and a solid brown horse.
